Day 47: I love getting yelled at and hit by a car - a New York story
As my eyes opened all there was was pain.. I felt so good yesterday after riding 130 miles - I felt like I leveled up in life - but this morning - my body reminded me that I didn’t quite have enough XP - my glass knees are once again screaming - and my legs muscles feel like they are going to tear in half with every step no matter how much I stretch.. Oh and just so everyone knows - despite the title of the blog - no one got hit by a car today
Anyway, we had a pretty late start today after going to bed really late last night. We got going around 9 and got some breakfast a dennys which was ‘okay’ but it did the trick and filled us up. After that we got our bikes and started to set out. We had planned the night before to take a picture with all 5 of us at the falls in the morning because it’ll be our last day together, but it was so late by the time we left we decided to forgo that since we had 93 miles to ride.
Things have a way of working itself out though because we got stuck at the US boarder while the boarder patrol accosted all the Canadians trying to come into the US. Since we were waiting we took a picture (but forgot to do all 5 of us so here’s a pic of the three of us and then Leo and Pat themselves:
So as we waited to be interrogated we joked about how Canadas only export to the US is socialists, how we hate teslas, and that the rainbow bridge back to the US is bugged so they can hear the one thing that everyone does right before they cross an international boarder - talk about what they about to bring over that they aren’t supposed to!
After getting through the boarder patrol without incident we immediately could tell we were in New York because people were yelling at us again, we were almost hit by 2 cars in the first 5 miles, and we saw a guy reversing the wrong way down a one way and simultaneously speeding. Ahhhh it’s good to be home idnt it? And for all those New York drivers out there reading this blog, let’s not pretend you’re not crazy drivers - because you know you are. But don’t worry - because I respect the hell out of y’all for making those roadways interesting.
So we mosied along for awhile and honestly we were feeling pretty bad, plus after getting about 40 miles in it started to get really hot and we ended up riding on newly laid asphalt which was both extremely hot because it was pure black and hard to bike on because our tires were sticking to it. So we got really warm and decided to pull over and sit in a supermarket for a minute while we talked about how much we regret doing this (don’t worry we don’t actually regret it - it’s really fun, but we were having a pretty bad moment). Anyway we just kinda hung out there staring into the flaming abyss (the save a lot parking lot) and not talking until it started to not be so hot. We also called Raj (the person we are staying with tonight) to maybe come pick us up and take us the last 50 miles but he was at work.. unfortunate.. we really did break today.
BUT we ended up starting to bike again because what else were we going to do and we ended up doing the last 50 miles pretty quickly and got in around 8. We also rode along the Erie Canal which was pretty but it all looked exactly the same and so did each town we passed through so idk but here’s a picture:
So we got in and Raj and Lucy has a wonderul meal prepared for us and of course some beer because this is actually a cross country booze cruise not a bike ride. They are very kind letting us stay with them and have bent over backwards to make us comfortable so huge shout out to them!
Now I’m laying in bed not really knowing what else to write - I think my funny reserves are starting to tap out because I feel more and more boring the longer we do this trip. Only other thing that reallly is going on these days is that Leo and Pat will be parting ways with us tomorrow - they say they are going to call or text me every night forever to tell me they love me before bed - I told Pat I would respond but probably not to Leo - which is pretty sad for him because I’m pretty sure meeting me was the single best thing that’s ever happened to him. Anyway - I’ll be sad to see them go because they were awesome to share a big part of this journey with. I’m sure I’ll see them later on - tune in tomorrow to see how we feel after doing 400 miles in 4 days! Let’s get the heck out of New York!
P.S. I don’t actually dislike New York - I kinda find it soothing when someone degrades me in a New York accent - it feels like home, and although some New Yorkers can be a bit prickly - they are all just big teddy bears on the inside (but they’ll never admit it). Goodnight!
