Day 32: Dynamic Weather Patterns
Every time a new video game comes out they boast about their dynamic weather - like okay cool the weather changes in the game - that happens in real life too so shouldn’t it really be the bare minimum? Anyway - today was like what dynamic weather in video games looks like because it changed pretty much every 30 minutes. We started out the day in a THICC mist, like the one from the movie The Mist. It was so thicc that we couldn’t see more than maybe 25 feet in either direction. After setting off, about five miles in I couldn’t see Brian or Julia anymore so I stopped so we could all be together with our lights and try not to get hit by a car. So Julia roles up and then we are sitting there waiting for Brian when I guy roles up on his 4x4 and is like hey those are nice lights, they work really well in this mist! Cue me feeling vindicated after buying a $200 set of lights for my bike (and Julia’s parents also bought her the taillight I have because they also loved it so much). Anyway, the guy goes about his business and we are still waiting for Brian, thinking, jeez, did he get hit by a car, get a flat, fall of his bike or something? Literally where is he? So we text him to get over here so we can all ride together and he responds telling us he’s had to stop a few times because he’s having bad leg cramping. So we told him to drink some electrolytes and water stretched it out a little and proceeded on pretty slowly.
After about 30 minutes, and right on cue, the mist all of a sudden cleared so we told Brian to take it easy and text us if he needed anything, we were sprinting off. It was now overcast and a lii oh felt temperature with no wind so Julia and I were pretty happy just biking and talking away. Then the unthinkable - the last 4 days the weather report said it would rain and it never did, then the day (today) it told us it wouldn’t rain, IT DID… Jason (our host last night and the son of the honey stinger guy) told us North Dakota was the place all the failed meteorologist came to get a job - and we are starting to believe him, so we got on our rain gear and kept on biking.
Finally 50 miles in we got to our rest point where we met back up with Pat and Leo and Dan (the guy who also stayed at the honey hub lastnight). We all had lunch at this little gas station cafe, and then I had a second lunch at that same cafe for good measure before heading out again, still raining…
After an hour or so the rain finally broke and it was back to how it was post mist, cloudy, cool and beautiful! We got to the town we initially thought we would stop in after about 75 miles and because we just love biking so much thought we would tack on 30 more! So on the way to this new town all the clouds actually cleared and it ended up being hot and sunny. I swear the only thing we were missing today was snow, but knock on wood I don’t think that’ll happen the rest of the trip…
Once we got into Kindred, ND we stopped at a gas station to get some dinner (all the gas stations out here have actual food which is nice). We then went over to the public park where we pitched our tents and set up for the night - the town is pretty nice! The park has a pavilion, swings, jungle gyms, a pool, and some basketball courts - so naturally I decided to have a little fun and brake Julia’s ankles on the hardwood - because ball is life. This town is pretty nice - except there is literally this guy mowing the grass at this park right now and it’s 10pm so I’m looking forward to him keeping us up all night (:
