Day 8: Small Town Charm
Yo what’s good - it’s Dustin again. Today is the day we’ve all (at least the three of us) been waiting for, a day of rest. It was also the first day I didn’t have to listen to Brian snore all night - so I proceeded to get a cool 12 hours of sleep, thank god! Our Warmshowers hosts Boyd and DiAnne cooked us up an amazing omelette with smoked Gouda, freshly picked mushrooms, and deer sausage - it was delicious!
Lucky for us we got into republic for their annual celebration - Prospector Days. Boyd was telling us that it’s a tribute to the origin of the town. It originally was a place settled to do mining and that brought more industry and civilization. We started the day walking to downtown to see the parade and it was a classic small town parade full of local heroes like fire and ems, the sheriff, and of course the miss Ferry county riding on a tricked out horse. They also has some classic cars which I found cool and Julia and Brian pretended to find cool. And the best part - literally every single vehicle had a person whipping candy at us (which for some reason included salt water taffy which is me and DiAnne’s favorite). Here are some photos from the parade:
After the parade we mosied around downtown, got some beer at the local brewery which was pretty good and had THE coolest bathroom sinks
And got some nachos. After that we went back up to the house. Julia and I played some cards (I taught her cribbage but she later thought I taught her cabbage…). We then all sat down to eat some pulled pork and corn on the cob with Boyd and DiAnne - they are so awesome and we all chatted for hours before going back down to town to listen to some live music and drinking more beer (aparently I didn’t learn my lesson from last time). DiAnne also told us all the town gossip which Unfortunately I can’t tell y’all because - mums the word and I would never rat out my girl DiAnne!
Anyway - after that we headed back up to the house and they showed us the new house they’ve been building (it is stunning, with a garage that’s the size of the house itself which is really my dream come true). Thank you very much to Boyd and DiAnne for really making us feel at home and of course for all the food - hopefullly we’ll have a picture to add with them tomorrow! Next up - Sherman pass (the tallest in Washington), stayed tuned for the struggle bus that’s about to pull up!
