Day 2: A day of preparation
Who is Dustin?
Hello y’all, my name is Dustin Moore a rising second year medical student! I’m from Berlin, NH; my favorite pastimes are living by the moto ‘live free or die’, complaining about wreckless government spending, and talking about my cat Finn too much. But more seriously - Outside of class I’m just some crunchy hippy who loves to camp, ride my bike, and drink beer. This summer my friends and I are riding across the country to raise money for the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp and I’m so excited to get to help send these kids to camp while having the time of my life in our last free summer.
Day 2:
Today our day began bright and early as we naturally woke up at 7am eastern time (4am our current time). We gathered our things and ran down for the continental breakfast before heading out to Burlington, WA to fit Julia’s and Brian’s bikes.
We hit the store to buy some food on the way… and just a little sneak peak of our diet for the next few months ~ Trail mix, a pound of peanut butter per day (Taylor Doolan’s worst nightmare), energy bars, and dried meats.
To our surprise we found one of the strangest products I may have ever seen… meat sticks flavored like my favorite chip (takis). And so we had to buy them just to try. The reviews are in: not bad, but definitely not good, and a unpleasant aftertaste that only marginally tastes like takis.
Later on we got to the bike shop where Julia and Brian got there bikes fitted and they both whispered to me after, “I didn’t know biking could actually be comfortable” to which I responded, “tell me that tomorrow on mile 50.”
After the bike fitting we set out to do my favorite activity - drinking beer!
We stopped at farmstrong brewing company - the beer was incredibly creative and tasty except for one that vagly smelled and tasted like urine (or at least what I assume urine would taste like)
But don’t let one bad beer fool you - this place is great!
Later on we got to our Airbnb in Anacortes, WA and did some more packing before we went down to the water to get some glizzys at Dockside Dogs. The place was decked out in 50s decor, complete with a classic Coca-Cola red 1952 Chevy suburban. The owner said quote, “it was either this or a white abductor van, and this was a tax write off.” And as someone from New Hampshire - I respect the hell out of that!
Now we are all in a food coma on the couch. Our big day (start of the ride) is tomorrow - and although anxious we are all ready to get going - cheers to good beer, funky hot dog stands, hoping for good weather! See you tomorrow!
