Day 15: Eureka!

Brian here with our second rest day of the trip! Today we were in the town of Eureka which is only about a mile from the Canadian border and is has some incredible views of the Rocky Mountains around us.

Yesterday was definitely a tough day for the three of us (me especially) and we decided the best method to recover was to shut off our alarms and sleep in as much as we could. We finally started rolling out of bed and taking showers / getting breakfast ready around 10:00 before starting to try and plan out what we wanted to do for the day. Most of that consisted of sitting on our butts but we played some cards (Dustin is still destroying us at any and all card games), tried to learn how to cartwheel, and played some basketball (we were all terrible).

Early in the afternoon, I was on a phone call when Julia pops her head around the corner and says “wanna go to Canada?” and obviously I had to say yes to that! Unfortunately though when we arrived at the border (a 5 minute drive) we found out from possibly the nicest border security guard ever that there is now a whole application process for getting into Canada with vaccination status and passports needing to be uploaded to a website. We decided that our maple-syrup enthusiasm wasn’t sufficient to go through all that and decided to just do some errands and check out the Eureka. Turns out there is a nice little historical site which had a lot of old farming machines and tools that were used in the 1800-1900s and we had a good time exploring that!

Some other highlights of the day included finding out at a nearby playground that while Julia can’t do a pull-up she is still the strongest of the three of us which we determined by arm wrestling. We also visited a few of the shops around town and stuck our advertising cards on every bulletin board we could find! 

After dinner at a local diner, we set up camp in a park on the edge of town and are headed to bed so we can get an early start to tomorrow. We have to actually be on time for our early start tomorrow though because the automatic sprinklers turn on at 7:00 AM and we don’t want to get caught by those!

Day 52: WE ARE HOME!

It’s the one and only Julia! Today is the day - we are finally home (I mean we still have to bike to the coast tomorrow, but that’s a later problem because tonight we finally can sleep in our own beds!) It has just been a surreal day. We only had 39 miles to home, so the end was very much in sight. Personally, I thought that today was going to be nice and easy since it’s a short day…. HA these routes always be playing. The whole first part of the day was straight uphill. Gotta love those nice 8% grades to kick off a day. Don’t worry, though, there was no tears or fear of vomiting so I call it a success! (Oh it was also raining all day, but it was actually pretty nice to have it cool us off) We were then blessed for the rest of the ride with mostly downhills. It was *chef’s kiss* beautiful. Day 1 - CT to WA!

Welcome everyone to our Coast to Coast for a Cause 2022 Blog! We are hoping to use this space to share our stories and adventures as we travel (on bike!) from Washington state back home to Connecticut.  Were we English majors in college? No. Will we ever be published novelist? Probably not. Will we have grammar and spelling mistakes in these posts? Most definitely. With that said, we will try to make this blog as interesting to read as possible, and make you feel like you are sitting around the campfire with us as we dive into our tales of the day!  At this point you are probably wondering, “Who is even writing this blog right now?” and “What is Coast to Coast?” Well, I am so glad you asked! Day 53: the last blog

Hey y’all - it’s Dustin, sorry the blog is late for the last one… probably because the rest of our day started like this:  Anyway: so we got up and left for our last ride to the beach around 830 - our friend Lenny was a trooper and decided he would ride with us the 44 miles to hammonaset and he did an awesome job! He did so well that we went too fast and how to slow down so we didn’t get there before the welcoming committee. We were getting a bunch of angry texts telling us we were too fast so we stopped for ice cream at Ashley’s which is supposedly the best in CT - it was pretty good - I got peach and there were also frozen pieces of peach in the ice cream which is nice! Also - in a desperate attempt to keep the trip going (I don’t know why she would want to do that) Julia decided to run over some glass and get a flat tire! Her first since Washington state, and the groups first since Montana - I think she did it on purpose…  Anyway, after our entourage finally showed up at the beach w
